Writing
These 5 lessons are based on: Girl and Robot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qx5hf1zLmk

Lesson 1: LO tomake inferences about a character
In the video, a young girl is building a steam powered robot but she has trouble getting it started. Think carefully about questions that you would ask the girl such as 'why are you building a robot?'

Once you have written questions, we are going to make inferences based on what we think the character thinking, feeling and might say at different points of the story.
1) When she comes out of the robots belly and looks up at the robot.
Example:
Thoughts - What do I need to add to make the robot move?
Feelings - My Robot looks extraordinary, I just can't wait for it to move.
Speech - "I hope that I can get you to work today!"

2) When she pushes the leaver up .

3) When she pushes the leaver up for the second time.

4) When the pipe burst and the dial goes within the red.

5) When the girl looks up at the robot after it broke into pieces.

Lesson 2 - To design a robot
The girl in the story designed and created her very own robot. If you could create a robot what would it do? What would you use? Would it have any special features? What would you name it?

For your task today, draw a robot that you would like to be created then label all of the special features that it has. Imagine your robot was put on show in a museum, write a short description about your robot so that visitor know all about it.

Lesson 3: LO to write a set of instructions
In today's lesson you will be writing instruction on how to make the robot that you designed. When writing instructions, it is important to include a title, subheadings (what you need and what to do) and adverbials to express time and cause. You will need an introduction paragraph that could include a rhetorical question. This paragraph tells your reader a bit about the robot and why it would be a good idea to read the instructions.

Think carefully about what your reader will need to make the robot. Different parts of your robots body might be made from using different materials.

When writing the instructions, remember to number each step and keep them brief e.g
1) First, carefully use the saw to cut the iron into a rectangle that has a length of around 30cm.

Read through your instructions and check that you have not missed any steps!

Lesson 4 - LO to continue a story ending
In the clip, the girl was unable to complete her robot as it eventually broke into pieces. In the lesson today, you will be continuing the story and deciding what happens next. Is the girl resilient and has another go at building her robot successfully? Does a friend help the girl to create her robot? Does the girl decide to look back at what went wrong and fixed the mistakes?

The story ending is completely up to you. To make your story more interesting to read, I would like you to include expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials.

Recap:
Expanded noun phrases use adjectives to tell us more about the noun E.g A colossal metal robot
Fronted adverbials are words or phrases that describe the action in the sentence E.g With a large bang, the robot came crashing to the floor.

Use words from the word mat to develop the vocabulary in your writing.

Lesson 5 - LO to write a diary entry
Imagine you are the girl in the story. After the robot falls a part in to pieces you decide to write about what happened in your diary. Remember in a diary entry, you always:
- write in chronological order
- write about key events
- Discuss thoughts and feelings
- write in the past tense.

I would really enjoy reading your diary entry so remember to send them to our class email address.
